Awareness does not necessarily mean that someone has a complete understanding
of the change’s full impact.
Reasons that understanding might not be achieved:
- Unclear on scope, nature, depth, or even the basic rationale for the change
- Beyond the area of expertise of the audience
(e.g.: explaining computer network topology changes to an accounting
manager)
Caution: Do not mistake confusion for resistance. Confusion is valid when the message has not been adequately presented to the target. Actual resistance develops only if the person has enough understanding to form a
perception and judgment.
Efforts to increase understanding
- Question / Answer sessions
- Specify greater level of details.
- Admit both what is known, and what is not known.
- Lead with the intention of the change.
